Omicron virus : Is it officially the third wave of the pandemic?

The Omicron virus is here – to stay or to break havoc is yet to be known. But it has made it’s official touchdown around the world. UAE is currently witnessing a ten fold increase in the number of cases ever since they identified the first case in the month of December.

How severe is this variant?

The symptoms of Omicron have been identified to be less mild than the other COVID-19 variants. Serious lung infections seem to be less likely in patients affected with the Omicron variant. However, the Omicron variant is identified to be more contagious than the Delta variant which has resulted in a spike in the number of cases worldwide. The biggest worry is that the Omicron virus has more than 5 mutations, 30 of which are directed towards the spike protein – the area that vaccines target. Thus, vaccinated people are also at a risk of contracting the virus, however the severity of infection has been identified to be low in such cases.

How do I know if I’m infected?

Researchers are working hard to understand the Omicron variant in depth and the extent of damage it does to the body. However, a few common symptoms that have been noticed are fever, cough, excessive exhaustion, body aches, loss of appetite, headache and itchy throat. While the loss of smell and taste were the key identifiers with the first strain of COVID-19, patients infected with Omicron haven’t complained of facing these yet. In case you experience any symptoms, do not delay getting tested. Book a PCR Test from the comfort of your home and avoid the risk of infection.

How do I protect myself?

Vaccination campaigns worldwide are in full swing to keep a lid on the virus. Dubai has managed to avoid citywide lockdowns unlike major cities around the world. This was possible due to the vaccination drives in the city. Currently, booster doses are being administered and so far just 30% have been covered. The government worldwide has urged everyone over the age of 18 to take a booster six months from the date of their second shot.

The rules of this socially distanced world aren’t new

Avoid going out. If you do, ensure that you’re wearing an N95 mask. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, get it done at the earliest. Ensure that you eat healthy food and stay well hydrated. Keep your body and mind relaxed and avoid any stress. In case you experience any symptoms, book our Quarantine Package and self isolate yourself.
