WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY: 10th SEPTEMBER 2022 (WSPD)

WSPD is organized by IASP (International Association of Suicide Prevention) with the theme of “Creating Hope Through Action” which is focusing on suicide prevention throughout the world by spreading awareness and help as much as possible.

Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s death and can be due to anxiety, mental disorders, depression, autism, bipolar disorder, etc.

LET’s TALK ABOUT FACTS:

Facts show that approximately 1.5% of deaths worldwide are caused due to suicide whereas the rate of men committing suicide is 1.5 times more than women in developing countries and 3.5 times more in developed countries.

“Suicide is not an answer it’s Destruction.”

PURPOSE:

The main objective of this day is to create awareness regarding suicide prevention by coming together as a community to share experiences and resources and by taking informed actions we can reduce suicide instances around the world.

This day sets a reminder to always have a ray of hope as there is always an alternative to suicide and inspires confidence and light in all of our lives.

Suicide prevention includes protective measures and support from friends and family. The protective measures include treating anxiety and mental illness symptoms, introducing coping strategies to people who are struggling with life, support from friends and family, and continuous counselling.

“A National Strategy for suicide prevention was created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2001 which laid a framework for suicide prevention.” It focused on identifying the patterns of suicide prevention and ideation to help the people who are stressed and provides a sense of resilience and a ray of hope in their lives.

SPECIFIC STRATEGIES FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION:

  • Immediate counselling to stop any kind of emotional incidents such as drug overdose or suicide.
  • Psychotherapy.
  • Supportive therapy includes elements like drug abuse rehab, psychotropic medications, family mental health counselling, and access to emergency phone call services like ERs and hotlines for people at risk of suicide, among others.
  • Taking the help of support groups, and motivating self-care activities like meditation, physical activity, etc.

There is always a harsh stigma attached to suicide and therefore it’s important to break it by helping each other as a community.
